AMR means Antimicrobial Resistance. A serious condition wherein antibiotics lose their effectiveness. As a result, you may stay ill for longer, or worse, in life-threatening situations, antibiotics may not work at all. AMR is caused by consuming antibiotics without medical advice, re-using old prescriptions, or not completing the prescribed course.

The good news is that you can curb AMR. Just follow simple and effective practices of good hand hygiene, completing vaccinations, and consuming antibiotics only as advised by a doctor.

So, let’s start being more responsible with antibiotics and stop the spread of AMR.

WHAT IS ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE?

Antimicrobial resistance is the ability of bacteria to protect itself against the effects of an antibiotic medication. It can happen when the bacteria decreases or destroys the effectiveness of antibiotics which can cure and prevent infections. As a result, the bacteria survive and multiply, causing more harm.

CAUSES OF ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE

Antimicrobial resistance is estimated to cause over 700,000 deaths per year, worldwide. Read the full scale of its impact here.

ABOUT ICMR-PFIZER

ABOUT ICMR PFIZER CENTRE FOR AMR RESEARCH & EDUCATION

In February 2018, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Pfizer signed the first-ever public-private partnership on AMR in India. The aim of this partnership is to address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance in India. The dedicated center that serves as a nodal point to launch pan-India interventions focusses on the four areas of Surveillance, Stewardship, Advocacy and Awareness:

  • Expanding ICMR’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program across the country in a phased manner with focus on smaller in-patient centres (smaller hospitals and nursing homes).
  • Enhancing ICMR’s existing AMR Surveillance Program by training specialists to run an expanded  Surveillance Network that would cover both private and government hospitals to  collate, analyse and publish drug resistance data across all geographies in India.
  • Create awareness and advocacy program using media and non-media platforms to disseminate information on antibiotic resistance, promote rational use of antibiotics, encourage infection control techniques and organize conferences and awards to recognize best practices.
ABOUT ICMR

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, is the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world. ICMR’s research priorities align with the National health priorities

These  efforts  are  undertaken  with  a  view  to  reduce  the  total  burden  of  disease  and  to  promote health  and  well-being  of  the  population. ICMR promotes biomedical research in the country through intramural as well as extramural research.

ICMR launched the AMR initiative in 2013 and supports research leading to understanding trends and patterns of AMR in the country, understanding the mechanisms of resistance at molecular level, support antimicrobial stewardship efforts and the research efforts leading to development of new drugs and diagnostics. ICMR’s initiative spans medical colleges and hospitals, both from the private and government sector. ICMR is also partnering with CDC, USA, NIAID, USA, Research Council Norway and NIID Japan to support research in addressing different aspects of AMR.
